Partha Chatterjee

Partha Chatterjee is a macroeconomist and educator based in India. He is currently the Dean of Academics at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, and a Professor at the Department of Economics. Previously, he was a faculty member at the National University of Singapore Business School and FMS, University of Delhi. He has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota.

Professor Chatterjee’s research interests are broadly in macroeconomics, international economics, and issues related to emerging economies. His current research focuses on understanding economic performance dynamics in India and other emerging economies.  His work has been published in reputable journals, and he regularly speaks at conferences and workshops. He also contributes articles to leading newspapers and magazines. He has participated in discussions on TV and radio like BBC World News, CNBC, Zee Business, Korean Radio Channel TBS, etc.

He has a keen interest in issues related to higher education, particularly in India, both intellectually and as a practitioner. At present, as Dean of Academics, he leads the university’s academic planning and is responsible for setting up the university’s academic policies and practices and managing academic operations. He is also part of the team to negotiate and establish a partnership with Arizona State University and launch two dual degrees as part of the partnership. He is leading one of the dual degrees, BS in Business Data Analytics.

He is a founding faculty member of the Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, and has contributed to several dimensions of building the university from its inception. As the inaugural Head of the Department of Economics at Shiv Nadar University, he has built up a department from the ground up to become one of the best in the country. He has recruited world class faculty members, established the B.Sc. (Research) and M.Sc. in economics and PhD in economics programs. He has conceived, planned and launched the first multidisciplinary program at the university, B.Sc. (Research) in Economics and Finance.

Also, as the first Dean for International Partnerships at the university, he has created the office of international partnerships and shaped the university's global engagement strategy. In a short period, coinciding mostly with disruptions caused by Covid, he has forged several research partnerships across the globe, increased opportunities for student mobility. He had also conceived and started the Beyond Boundaries series, a platform to engage with leading scholars and academic leaders across the world. 

He also led the ideation and creation of a vision document for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as part of the university-wide visioning exercise at the end of the first decade of the university.
